On the 3rd April 1915 is the following article entitled " The Call to Arms - honour to a Blairgowrie soldier"
"A supplement to the London Gazette issued on Thursday night, contains a list of 452 warrant officers, non-commissioned officers, and men to whom His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of Distinguished Conduct Medal for the act of gallantry and devotion to duty.
Amongst them is the name of 10103 Acting Company Sergeant-Major T.J.Burns, 1st Bn. Gordon Highlander's who belongs to Oakbank, Blairgowrie "for conspicuous gallantry on the 14th December, 1914, in an attack on German trenches near Kemmel, when he conducted the advance of his platoon with great coolness and ability under heavy fire after his officer had been wounded"
