Before the war, Albert was employed as a butcher with H. D. Brown and William Smith in Blairgowrie. Later he worked as a butcher in Dunning, west of Perth.
When he was a lad he was a Sergeant in Rattray Boys' Brigade.
According to the article in the Blairgowrie Advertiser of 13th August, 1943, he had received scalp wounds in the Battle of Alamein, but had recovered enough to rejoin his regiment.
