Blairgowrie Advertiser 1st August 1941
"News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. William Matthews, 36, Allan Street, Blairgowrie, that the ship on which their son, Mr. George Matthew, was second radio officer is overdue and must be presumed lost. Mr. Matthews was associated with his father in their well-known bakery business in Allan Street before going to Dundee Wireless College to train as a wireless officer. He was home on leave two months ago. While there will be sympathy with his family in their anxiety there will also be hope that, as in other cases, good news could yet be received."
It was reported that on 14th June 1941, while en route from Glasgow to Trinidad and Buenos Aires, S.S.St. Lindsay was torpedoed and sunk, with all hands, in the Atlantic by German submarine U751.
