"Another Blairgowrie Soldier Killed" (includes a picture)
On Thursday morning Mr. John Nicoll, Park Cottage, Ann Street, Blairgowrie, received intimation from the War Office that his youngest son, Private Alexander Nicoll, of the Royal Horse Guards Blue, has been killed in action on the 13th inst.
It will be remembered that in last week's issue Private W. Lauder, 1st Royal Dragoons, who was wounded in the fighting in Flanders on the above date, in a letter from Kendal Hospital, mentioned that "Alex Nicoll's Regiment was in the fighting that day".
Private Nicoll, who was 31 years of age, and served his apprenticeship as a painter with ex-Provost Smith, Blairgowrie, was eight years in the 3rd Dragoons, serving in the African War. One the outbreak of hostilities with Germany, he was called up and went to France in end of September. He tool part in a good deal of the fighting, and was fortunate in escaping scathless, though on one occasion his rifle was smashed with shrapnel.
This is the fourteenth victim of the War connected with Blairgowrie and Rattray district.
